mary-stewart-atwell1Happy Labor Day weekend! If you have thirty spare minutes over this glorious holiday, I highly recommend listening to Joy Radio’s archived show with Mary Stewart Atwell, author of Wild Girls.

Wild Girls is set in the isolated Appalachian town of Swan River. Atwell’s debut novel tells the story of the mysterious and terrifying wild girls, killers who menace a community.  The narrator, seventeen-year-old Kate Riordan, is torn between her desire to escape into the privileged world represented by the town’s posh boarding school and her allegiance to her hometown’s dark history.

Mary Stewart Atwell grew up in the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia.  Her short fiction has appeared in journals including Epoch and Alaska Quarterly Review, and in the anthologies Best New American Voices and Best American Mystery Stories.  She is a lecturer in creative writing at Cal Poly State University in San Luis Obispo, California.

I highly recommend adding Wild Girls to your reading list, then leaving a comment on Goodreads.  Personally,  I couldn’t put the book down, a real page turner. I even took it into the ladies room with me! Maybe that’s too much information!
