Don has no formal education, but has attended what might  be called “The University of Life” and earned a PH.D. in the “Art of Survival.” Don graduated from Cosmetology School in 1971 and has owned a successful unique  hair salon since 1978 in Palo Alto, California. Don and his partner, Jim, spend most of their time at Don’s one-of-a-kind secluded beach house perched on a cliff overlooking the Monterey Bay. Both have a dedicated Buddhist practice.

Don English blew the listeners away with his heart-wrenching life’s journey, from hell and back, involving murder, abuse and transcendence.  Don shared how after years of harboring the truth, one of his salon customers encouraged him to write about the harrowing experiences he faced as a child. Don explained how he survived years of hell; compared his journey to Jaycee Dugard’s; enlightened the audience on his choice of word “transcendence”;  and provided insight into his relationship with his brother, mother and father.

Outstanding interview today on Joy Radio with Bren McClain, an award-winning writer of fiction. Bren was named 2004 Fiction Fellow by South Carolina Commission, is a two-time winner of SC Fiction Project and has recently been named a Finalist in The Novel-in-Progress Category in the esteemed William Faulkner Writing Competition.

Bren read in her heartfelt, dynamic, and expressive voice an excerpt from her upcoming novel ONE GOOD MAMA BONE , a literary novel, set in the early 1950′s in rural upstate South Carolina. The novel is about the healing power of a mother cow’s love to save a fallen woman. The plot centers around a time-honored rite of passage for many young people even today, the 4-H tradition of “feeding out” a steer for the chance at Grand Champion.

With great compassion, Bren went on to talk about her main characters, Mama Red and Sarah Kramer; discussed how her novel feels like her life’s work; and shared how it wasn’t till she started writing about what is hers and hers alone that her writing unfolded.

I’ve heard it said, Write what you know. Others say, Write what you don’t know. I say, Write what opens your heart.” ~ Bren McClain

Would love your feedback on the show. If you haven’t already listened to Bren McClain’s interview click here.

Back in 2010, a couple of computer geeks (Tina Arnoldi and Michael Carnell) saw a number of nonprofits struggling with their technology and lacking the funds to pay for support. Their mission is to provide technology support, training, and resources to the South Carolina Lowcounty not-for-profit community. Through their website, local nonprofits can submit a request for tech support. Their services are volunteer based and free of charge, so that nonprofits can save their money for the things that really matter.

Is your nonprofit struggling? Are donations down and expenses up? Are you spending your nonprofit’s hard earned money on tech support which could be used toward furthering its mission? Could your agency benefit from free tech trainings or webinars on tools and techniques to further expand its message? Does your nonprofit need help with broken hardware, unruly databases, software, network implementation and Google tools? Listen to today’s Joy Radio Show here and see how other local nonprofits – Charleston HALO, Increasing HOPE and Junior Achievement of Coastal SC are bringing an end to their shrinking funds by utilizing the services of Palmetto Technology Fund (PATH). Catherine Underhill Fitzpatrick, former reporter, award-winning journalist, feature writer and author of “A Matter of Happenstance” was our guest today on JOY Radio: People Inspiring People. Catherine grew up in St. Louis and graduated from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Now retired, her 30-year career as a feature writer took her from a neonatal hospital ward, to a Death  Row cellblock, to  a champagne garden party hosted by Ralph Lauren.

On September 11, 2011 Catherine happened to be in Manhattan to cover Fashion Week runway shows for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. At first word of  the attacks, she rushed downtown and filed award-winning dispatches from the chaotic street near Ground Zero. During the show, Catherine mentions reporting from New York that week was an unforgettable experience. And the irony of a fashion writer reporting a world-changing tragedy gave rise to her book, “A Matter of Happenstance.” Continue reading »
