Lori Nelson SpielmanJoin Joy Radio tomorrow, 8.22.12 at 11 a.m. ET and LISTEN  to an interview with LORI NELSON SPIELMAN, debut novelist of  THE LIFE LIST to be published by Ballantine/Random House, summer 2013.

Lori will begin the show by reading an excerpt from her book.

Here’s how Deadline Hollywood describes the book: THE LIFE LIST tells the story of a young woman who embarks on “a year-long journey of self-discovery after her mother passes away and leaves her an inheritance with one big stipulation–in order to receive it she must complete the items on the ‘life list” of goals she made for herself when she was 14. Although apprehensive at the beginning, she takes on this challenge in a “bewildering and comedic journey through her adolescent dreams” which leave her “surprised to find the life, and the self, she’d lost along the way.”

Lori Nelson Spielman lives in East Lansing, Michigan, with her husband and a very spoiled K.C. (Kitty Cat). A former speech pathologist and guidance counselor, she currently works as a homebound teacher for inner-city students. Lori enjoys running, traveling, and reading, though writing is her passion. She spends her winters cursing the god-awful Michigan winters, and her summers sailing the glorious shores of Lake Michigan.

I believe we have many “earth angels”, but I can easily count two – my Mom and Dad. However, since it’s my Mom’s birthday in a few days, I’m going to speak about her…

My mom has always said that while we’re in Heaven, before we are born, we’re consciously looking for the parents and siblings we want, and that’s how we end up with the families that we’re in.  Well, if that’s true, then I know my siblings and I count ourselves as EXTREMELY LUCKY!

Our mom has always been there for us…  Over the years, she’s made sure that our clothes were always ironed, we had a cheering section at every sporting event, made every birthday cake by scratch, displayed our presents on Christmas morning in the way that makes you feel as if it’s the most beautiful place on earth, ensured we all attended Catholic school (regardless of how difficult it was financially) and above all, she made us feel as if we had the most loving, support system any child could have. And all she said she’s ever wanted for us is to be happy!  On her birthday, I hope she knows how much she means to us and how much we love her for being our mom, our cheerleader, our friend and our “earth angel” all these years.

I love ya lots, Mom!  Molly Continue reading »

Angels Found in the Tiniest of Creatures
by Jackie Haugh

In 1990, I was the mother of four very active children under the age of eight. My three daughters were old enough to know their boundaries, but not my two-year-old son.

One day, while I was busy cleaning the house, thinking all was well and safe with my babies, I heard the door bell ring. Opening the front door, I found a large, burly construction worker holding my little boy’s hand. Our neighbor down the street was in the middle of massive remodel and everyday Timmy would stare out the window and the watch the trucks go by.

“Lady, I think he belongs to you,” the gentleman said. “I can tell you have a bunch of kids by the balls scattered all over the lawn.” Continue reading »

Outstanding interview today on Joy Radio with Bren McClain, an award-winning writer of fiction. Bren was named 2004 Fiction Fellow by South Carolina Commission, is a two-time winner of SC Fiction Project and has recently been named a Finalist in The Novel-in-Progress Category in the esteemed William Faulkner Writing Competition.

Bren read in her heartfelt, dynamic, and expressive voice an excerpt from her upcoming novel ONE GOOD MAMA BONE , a literary novel, set in the early 1950′s in rural upstate South Carolina. The novel is about the healing power of a mother cow’s love to save a fallen woman. The plot centers around a time-honored rite of passage for many young people even today, the 4-H tradition of “feeding out” a steer for the chance at Grand Champion.

With great compassion, Bren went on to talk about her main characters, Mama Red and Sarah Kramer; discussed how her novel feels like her life’s work; and shared how it wasn’t till she started writing about what is hers and hers alone that her writing unfolded.

I’ve heard it said, Write what you know. Others say, Write what you don’t know. I say, Write what opens your heart.” ~ Bren McClain

Dear Mr. Hallmark, Sir:

I am writing to you from heaven,
And though it must appear
A rather strange idea,
I see everything from here.

I just popped in to visit
Your store to find a card-
A card of love for my Mom,
As this day for her is hard. Continue reading »
